Don't know anything about syntex, but do know that nylon and polyester get used in composite boat lay-ups. Like polypropylene and kevlar, they add "toughness" - the ability to change shape without yielding (breaking apart). See www.johnrsweet.com for more info and a source of laminating fabrics of all kinds. John has been a WW kayak builder since the late 60's or early 70's and his company is intended to paddler/builders. Charlie Walbridge's "Boatbuilder's Manual" is another source of info if you can track down a copy.
