i saw a compass recently (cheap toy though)that was about 1in round inside a clear 1in ball. so it could go on any tilt or whatever, but because it was almost a toy, it bounced around a lot and the vertico would be real bad.(it might have been a large keychain ornament)

but i wonder if you drilled out the mineral oil and replaced it w/ some thicker gear lube it it would be happy medium. use those rear mirrored trick sunglasses and mount it just on and below one of the glass legs and look backa at it. very inaccurate markings tho.
