You can reduce the pinch/scissors action problem by using a rub strip that is half round, or, in the case of 1/4 x 3/4, that would be half of an oval.

you can remove most of the excess wood with a table saw, or a plane. From this you can finish with coarse sandpaper and then fine sandpaper.

Your finished piece is a bit under 1/4 inch thick in the center and tapers down to an edge with practically no thickness.

You get less of a grip if you were seeking some kind of handhold, but it gives mostly the same protection.
