Go see John or Herbie at NWOC, downstairs from Matt and Cam, and ask them about bulkheads and cracks. Everyone abuses rental boats and they would have lots of experience.

It is my belief that Matt and Cam are heavily influenced by the aesthetics of not having hatches. They prefer the pure, clean surface. You can't have that with bulkheads because then you have to have hatches.

You can mitigate the hard edge of the bulkhead. Bend the bulkhead and then glass it. Use brass brads to nail the edges to a curved surface, glass the surface, turn it over and cut and file the brad points off, glass the concave surface. Another option is to put big fillets. A third option is to go to you local model shop and get the strips of balsa wood that are triangular in cross section. Put these at the bulkhead/hull corner and then glass over. Voila, big fat fillets.
