Why have you limited yourself to kits? If you are looking for kits, are you limiting yourself to wood boats? Why not skin on frame?

Certainly every person who contributes to this list has a favorite boat to recommend. If you go through some of the older posts you will get a pretty good idea of what boats are actually being built, how long each takes, and the performance of these boats.

If you have access to some basic materials you can probably gather the same materials used in the kits on your own. This list has plenty of tips on how to do that. Typically you will save money, but spend a bit more time by not using a kit. If cost is important to you...

On the other hand, there are many designs that are not available as kits. If you fall in love with a design, or wish to modify one to suit your personal needs, you'll be at a point where no kit is available. Not to worry.

Get in some reading time. In addition to this list there are several books on constructing kayaks (and other boats, like canoes) which you should read through before starting. These will show you how typical boat kits (and non-kit boats) are assembled. They will also give you some tips on tools and techniques.

At some point in your reading you will have what is known as an ``AH HA !!!'' experience. In that moment you will realize exactly what boat you want to build, and you'll be assembling it in your mind before you can get to the phone to place the order.
