What about a sacrificial rubrail of epoxy coated hardwood screwed/countersunk to the sheer with marine grade bronze or brass screws but not glued or epoxied to the boat. If you're encountering a great deal of damage to this area from docks and a rubrail gets so banged up that you don't like the way it looks anymore you can install a new one quite easily.
