I too have had similar problems. I had 4 of 8 "Leidy lid" hooks pop off the underside of my hatch covers 3 weeks ago. Epoxy is wonderful stuff, but it has poor properties with regard to heat and UV.

: Dark color woods will increase heat generation greatly and should be
: considered carefully if you live in very hot climes. You can reduce heat
: production by using dark woods as accents or in smaller patches on your
: deck.

Simply leaving the hatches off will help a great deal with air circulation and getting the heat spread out a little.
