: I am trying to build a canvas covered kayak but I am looking for a good place
: to get canvas. I have found referances of other builders for $6 a yard but
: all i find locally is $25 a yard. Can anyone recommend what kind I should
: get and good places to get it. Or can you reccomend another inexpensive
: alternative? Any help is appreciated... Rick
crdaniels.com is the cheapest I've found. You want #10, 15 ounce, unprimed duck canvas. Canvas makes a good skin and is nice to work with in my opinion.
I've used 8 oz nylon and 9 oz polyester both from George Dyson. The nylon is a little easier to work with and heat shrinks more, it also has a tighter weave than the 9oz polyester. The nylon will loosen slightly in damp weather but not enough to matter, it tightens right up in dry warm conditions. All in all the nylon is a better choice in my opinion. Both will require a tube of aqua- seal to close up the stiching holes that are created as a part of getting the skin tight in my experience
The heavier nylon in 12 or 13 oz is perhaps the best of all skins but it costs more. 13 oz polyester is great too but requires darts or extra sewing and cutting to deal with the wrinkles as it has almost no stretch.
