I switched to an Aleut paddle after 30 plus years of various Euro style paddles. My graphite Euro now sits on the back deck as a spare and hasn't been used for a long time. Why? Although it took a while to get used to the different paddling style, it really is easier on the body for extended paddling. As for speed, I regularly paddle with a friend 10 years my junior who derides my "stick" but we still manage a good turn of speed together in both smooth and "interesting" water. It's just a different technique and a matter of preference. I wouldn't say one is better than the other - I just prefer it. Give one a try, but for at least several paddles. You might find you will come to prefer it too. Most important of all - don't obsess, just enjoy.
