I went through this when I recently took my 17.5' kayak I designed a 4 years ago and lengthened it out to 19'. I adjusted the sections to optimize the prismatic coeffient for best efficiency at high speed. Interestly, resistance calculations showed the increased frictional resistance due to the increase in surface area was more than offset by the decrease in wave making resistance.

Wow, I though I was being conservative when I put a second 4 oz. layer on the outside bottom of the hull of my boat, the rest being a single layer of 4 oz. over 3/16 strips. My boat weighs 30 pounds, making my old kevlar boat a dog. I wouldn't take this boat on an expedition though.
