The way this was presented to me was more as a way to visualize the stroke to foster good form. The way I was taught was to imagine that your boat is sitting in jello, twist your torso, plant the paddle, and unwind pulling your boat past the paddle. Your elbow doesn't bend too much until near the end of the stroke.
