Dave, are you serious about that 1/2 gallon? I did the outside of a s&g kayak with 4oz of glass and 4oz of polyester cloth, didn't soak up as much as dynel but a lot more than glass still. I've got my doubts now about the utitiity of stuff like that for large areas, I mean it works great for what it is but I bet a couple yards of 6oz S-glass doubled on that foot ball area would do just as well, weigh less, be easier to sand the edges and really give something that wouldn't get dinged sitting on rocks. But I know its a fun feeling to find out how tough it really is.
