Hey Mark
Along with that really light weight, you noticed the growth rings. That would be the other important consideration. You want, ideally, as many growth rings across the board as possible. Sometimes, along with the light weight, you only have a few growth rings and that is not good. Strength goes down proportionately with the width of the rings. So, it's a toss up as to which way to go. I would take the extra weight as to have the loss in strength. There is a happy medium, but it is a matter of what you feel safe with. Good pickin' !!
