: I'm interested in taking the lines from the hull of an exsisting boat design,
: so that I can build a cedar strip recreational rowing shell. I would like
: to know how best to accomplish this. I think it only necessary to take the
: hull lines, since the decks of most shells are very simple. I am wondering
: though, how to get a nice and fair radius at the sheer/deck transition.
: I've read a few bits on the basics of taking hull lines from various boat
: types, but I've never done it. I was wondering if anyone here has, and how
: you went about the process.
: There are only a few exsisting plans for rowing shells, none of which I am
: overly thrilled or very familiar with (the clc oxford is nice but I would
: like to build in cedar strip, Mac Mcarthy's are still a possibility,
: albeit a bit too beamy). The lines I want to use are from a boat that we
: have rowed and like very much. Any suggestions or advice is greatly
: appreciated.

hi garland

check the archives on this. there are some possibilities i and others posted there.

i think the one i liked best was first setting up the shell positive w/ a stringline somewhere straight say above the keel, (level the shell first), mark the hull every say foot. then take 2 'L' pces of card, tape toghether tight on a station and vertically on an adjacent say sawhorse. cut the smallest round pc of card possible that its radius is just greater than the space in the 'L's is at the largest station. Mark the hull ctr and deck ctr on the 'L's AND the stringline location.

jab a hole in the ctr of the circle, push thru a pen and go around half perimeter of the shell. do for all the stations. now the real hull size is just the radius offset from the lines you made. to some degree can scale up or down.

i bet once under way that this would be real quick

another approach is to just use the Ls and glue on multiple darts of card or paper just touching the shell say every inch or so. would take a little longer.

(if you have acces to old drafting machines or parallel rules there are some boneass real simple ways.)
