The end 'form' is actually a 2x4 tha the stem gets attached to in the standard building method. I just shortened it a few inches. It also helps balance the kayak in the wind, and it looks better

I think deck screws would be too big. Check around for a cheap source. My last Walrus cost $120 before the seat and deck rigging.
