I can recommend the Chris K. method with one caveat. I used a borrowed belt
: sander to remove most of the material and get "close." I
: finished up with a good, sharp low-angle block plane.

: Added Tip: When gluing up a scarf joint, I always pre-coat the end grain of
: the joint with unthickened epoxy and let it soak in a bit before applying
: thickened epoxy and clamping. This seems to create a much stronger joint
: (prevents "starving").
