Lemme throw a data point in the Bucket re the strength of some of our handmade kayaks.
Just after I finished the boat, one of the fittings on the loops of two inch webbing holding my North Bay up at the top of my garage ceiling failed, sending the aft 80% of the boat down ten feet to the concrete. Gave it a nasty gouge, at least an eighth of an inch deep --- the concrete, that is. The boat was fine, although the paint at the point of impact was gone. Never bothered to do anything about it --- the floor, that is. The boat, either, for that matter. These turkeys are tough birds.
All that said, I had added two carlins and an extra deck frame to the after deck when I built it, 'cause standard NB coamings are close to the slide-in-only ocean cockpits mentioned by another respondent. That may have accounted for the survival of the stern, but I doubt it.
