linking to websites... not a problem

(Being a webmaster for a very large company) I'm pretty sure that by putting a non-restricted webpage up on the internet you are by default allowing access to the public and also allowing people to link to it's content. If you want a site or page restricted you password protect it or limit access at your server in some way. There are no laws against simply linking to a website. If there were we wouldn't have search engines would we. Could you imaging google.com asking permission of all 1.3 billion websites it links to?

Now if you linked to a site and the link said something like "click here for the website of a lunatic" I'm not sure if it would be considered liable or just your informed opinion. Then again, you can sue for just about anything these days.
