Well, I have to vote for leaving it alone until it's started to get hard and you can usually peel it off or scrape it off easily. I've seen too many people use damp cloths to wipe it off only to find that it soaks into the wood and leaves light spots in the wood when finished. If the glue is water soluable, then it thins and soaks down into the wood when wiped off with a damp cloth. It's not going to hurt anything just dripping down.

My best advice is: make your glue bead a lot smaller. You don't need all that squeeze out as you are wasting twice the glue as you are using. You just need a thin bead along the strip and it will squish down as the strips are applied.

If you just let it run down and solidify it won't sink into the wood but just sit on top. Easy to remove and no stains. If it sits too long it might bring up a sliver of wood with it when removed. My guess would be about 2 hours max and it should just peel off.
