: hi john
: looks really cool.
: now you're the guy that knows whats going on -some questions for when i glass
Hi Mick---Boy do I have you fooled, I am stumbling along trying to get my yak finished for my trip, build a carrier rack, figure a new way to fasten my seat in the boat and varnish,,, all in a little over 4 weeks. I can't believe I have been on this boat since last Oct.
: -would it have been any help to put the yak on its side and do one half the
: coaming, then flip and do the other half?
When I turned the yak upside down to epoxy the underside strips and then let it set for three hours to partially set, then when I resumed epoxying I did turn the yak on each side to help epoxy more easily, then turned it back and did the top. Since most yaks don't have the side compartments like mine I think it would be easier to do a good job of making a coaming this way.
: - could you do the half layup and then tape(maybe even 2in wide clear tape)
: over the whole thing and squeeze out extra glass and ridges before setup?
: or saran wrap way over so you could sqeeze out
: -would hotgluing littl scraps of strips aroung the perimeter and use
: thumbtacks to help hold the glass be any use
I'm sure the glass could be held in different ways, the way I did it seamed easiest for me but took a lot of prep time.
: - if you had used really thick(say 4layers) of masking under the coaming
: where you don't want any glass to go - could you have just planed off the
: excess because of the ridge?
I think I should have used masking tape and lots of the the way you suggested. It would have made my life a lot easier a little later.
: you;re the man!
: for the colour, when you do the under curve, just add some pigment to that
: glass and you'll only have only the thin edge to consider - call it a
: subtle design rim line. it'll probably look way cool.
This coloring thing is all new to me and I am going to listen to your suggestions.
: another thought is to lay it up on the bias but longer strips around the
: perimeter - say 4in by 12in or so overlapped - and use hot glue all along
: the inside(like a continuous unbroken line for a stop) as the mask and
: attatchmt. pull all the layers up over and tape/glue/tack(to some scrap).
: maybe could even wet the glass after all in place(probably hard to wet all
: out).
The only reason I used the strip of 1 3/4 glass as I did was to use up the roll of tape glass. I think when I put on the last layer of bias long strips of glass it will be a lot easier.
: i know you can get different strenghts of hot glue, i wonder if the low
: strength is low temperature as well.
: and for sanding up, maybe make one of your extrusions for the sanding block.
I will start sanding this ridged mess this morning and I hope it goes well. Time is slipping away for me and so much to do.
Take care,
John
