Mustut be the day for guys named Russ. 
In addtion to having a less fragile edge, The advantage of planing off the edge is that it allows you the opportunity to take a little nip here and there to get a closer mating less gaps.
In the end either way would probobly work its comes down to preferences and what your most comfortable with
