If using matches worked, it worked. I wouldn't recommend planing adjacent to the low spot, that just makes the low spot larger, it doesn't remove it. The strength is in the glassing, not the wire stitching. Using matches and such to adjust the shape, and then filling the gap with filleting (not fairing) compound and taping it will be fine.
