Taping the seams

9 oz. fiberglass tape is commonly used to tape the seams of S&G kayaks. To me, this seems like a tremendous amount of overkill when the hull is commonly covered with 6 oz. or even 4 oz. cloth. Why is 9 oz. tape used? Because this is all that is available? If I cut 4 oz. tape from scrap cloth, would that be sufficient? It is my understanding that multichine kayaks use a layer of 4 oz. cloth on the inside with no seam tape. Am I correct? Does anyone have any structural engineering knowledge or practical experience in this area? Thanks for any opinions. Dave
