You will probably find that a painted surface will actually show scratches and/or gouges easier than a Bright finish. The epoxy and micro-balloons is an excellent idea. Very easy to sand and will smooth out just fine. If you are glassing, then be sure tu sand/scratch the surface for the paint/primer to stick. Be sure to use a primer as they are made to grab a rough surface better than the actual paint color. Are you using a fairing board? They are very easy and do a good job of leveling over distances.
