Sorry Ross,
fat fingers that should read bow and stern can get kind of punky. End purs are a few ouncces of epoxy poured into the tips of the boat and allowed to cure. This will renforce any weakness in them,

As for painting. Its ussuallly better to put pigments in the epoxy and do the whole boat
