: does wrc benifit from soaking when trying to bend extreme curves? the ribs on

Most folks I know have used flatsawn red or white oak for ribs in true Greenland SOF kayaks, green is best, but kiln-dried works too. Even with oak ribs, broken ribs are not uncommon for a kayak subjected to hard use so I personally wouldn't use wrc. As Kent mentioned, Harvey Golden, or the baidarka list, would be a great resource for you. Harvey has a list of his preferred woods and materials used on his kayaks at the link below (page down to the illustration of Harvey twisting a soaked and steamed rib). According to the text, Harvey prefers ash and white oak for ribs on Greenland kayaks.
