I think mine was called a ryoba saw. It has crosscut teeth on one side and ripping teeth on the other. That means that it doesn't have a reinforcing rib along the back of the blade, like some other japanese style saws. I think the crosscut side has about 16 tpi and the ripping side has about 8 tpi. The interesting thing is that the teeth are a little closer together near the handle, so that as you start the cut, you have a lot more control.
I like this style of saw a lot. I don't miss having a rib om the back of the blade. Since you cut while pulling, the blade is in tension, so you don't need the extra stiffness that a rib would give you. Also, I think the rib would get in the way if you wanted to make a cut longer than the width of the blade (two or three inches.) If you plan on ripping anything or scarfing anything, the rib would probably get in the way.
Overall, I think this saw with both ripping and crosscutting teeth is the best of both worlds.
