Bryan,
I used my jigsaw to cut out my flush mount hatches. Nerve-wracking, yes, difficult, no, results, very good. I don't think that the very thin kerf is needed because when you coat the edges of the hatch and the edges of the deck where the hatch was cut out the kerf space is reduced by the epoxy.
