I don't want to discourage you, but I sold a complete Laser with trailer for $600 (US). It won't matter if you get good use out of your boat though.

Start in the morning when the wind is light, and don't progress to harsh conditions too quickly. Get a copy of Royce's Sailing Illustrated. Best beginners book, and even experts will learn new info from it.
