George also mentions the breaking of paddles, even in a pool. Paddles are designed for the force/stresses involved in pushing the kayak through the water. Some have warnings against using them for pusing off. Even a weak paddler has enough strength to break a narrow-bladed paddle if they incorrectly attempt an extended-paddle-sweep roll. Apparently the Inuits and Greenlanders were paddling with (and in) death-traps...

George even had a paddle of his broken by someone who stepped on it on the beach. Apparently it was under-engineered?
