Dean,
I have never seen any real-world failure data, either on woodstrip or production boats. As far as I know, the only data out is what we all have seen, static testing of flat panels in different layups, showing 350-500# failure rates, depending on the layup. If I remember right, that data wasnt in PSI, it was lb-force to failure on a 12x12 panel. And there hasnt been any presented for production fiberglass layups, nor for rotomolded plastic, which IMHO is what we really should be comparing against.

I can tell you this; I am impressed by how well that Spring Run handles being pounded in the surf. I had the bow at least 8" buried last weekend, and not only did it pop right out as I broached, but when I went in to check the hatches, there were only two sponges of water in each hatch. So they do leak, but only a tiny amount. I get about a half-sponge in there just from condensate.

The Spring Run is not a very good boat for the surf zone, but as far as the layup goes I'll repeat it on the Walrus. I suppose if I were to get plowed into a rock it would fail, but so would any boat.

: I still need data to show that I have a greater risk of being
: injured/stranded/swamped/sunk/swept-out-to-sea in my standard-layup wood
: kayak as compared to an off-the-shelf fiberglass kayak. Until then, I
: don't believe that my kayak is the death-trap George claims it is.
