deck-hull taping s&g?

I am building a self-designed s&g 18-footer. The design uses sheer clamps and there will be no glass on the deck. I am getting ready to tape the exterior hull-deck joint. My question is this; should I sand the edges of the tape to feather them into the deck surface or should I leave them standing? I can see pros and cons to both practices. I am more concerned with strength/functionality than with appearance.
