I think it gives you some strength, but mostly because it gives the glass a larger radius to conform to, and you're not folding the glass fibers. Same idea as a thickened epoxy fillet on an S&G.

I threw in an extra layer of 15 oz. biaxial glass over the inner stems, since that's a likely impact area.
