Just figure out which way to cut so you get the verticle grain on the wide face of your strips and you're all set. If you have to get them out of the 3/4" side and the ends are covered with paint, then run them down to 11/16" or 5/8". It won't matter, except that you'll have to use an extra strip or two on the go-around, but the narrower strips will be easier to bend. Good find on the free wood.
