I live down in Orange county and have the same problem. The answer seems to be to use Redwood as an alternative. I've used redwood on two previous boats and had good luck with it. But I've recently discovered a source for rough timbers of western red ceder here in Orange county at a lumber yard called Ganhal. They have 2X6 & 2X8 16', 18' & 20' boards. I priced out 2 2X6x18's and included the labor for them to resaw into 1X boards and it came to $236.00. Thats almost $6.00/bft. I can get clear all heart redwood here in Orange county for $4.00/bft. Another source for you might be Jackel Enterprises in Watsonville Ca, They have a website http://jackelenterprises.com and indicate on their site that they have both western red and alaskan yellow ceder.
