Ross,
I have had good luck scraping off the frayed edges with a small triangle scraper that I have. I have also filled first and then sanded. I used the scraper on the real ugly ones though. On the kayak that I am building at this time, I am using the tape trick that One Ocean Kayak uses on the seams. Works good. No frayed edges. I can't get to the site at this time, but try it later.
