: A table saw or other machined surface is excellent for keeping sandpaper flat
: for the "scary sharp" sandpaper sharpening method - which is
: what I use most. However I like to be able to tape the 'base' sandpaper
: sheet to keep it from moving around. I lay the finer grits on top of that
: to keep then from moving as well.
: I went to a local tile shop and asked about 12x12 marble tiles. When the
: woman at the counter found out I only wanted a couple she pointed me to a
: pile in the back corner of their yard where they had some odd lots and
: remainders and told me to help myself. Now I just grab a tile, lay the
: appropriate grit on it, and touch up whatever blade displeases me. Not a
: major deal, but the price was right and I am more likely to use it because
: it doesn't disrupt anything else I may have in process.
Same here;
I bought a piece of 3/8" plate glass around 16" x 20" and put my 8 progressive grits ( 1/4 sheet each ) on the glass with 3m's spray contact adhesive. Works great and when a piece gets exceptionally worn or torn, I just peel it up and replace it. I keep a little spray bottle handy with water and I can go up the grit on one side and then rotate it to get to the others. I can do a chizel in about 10 minutes, from chipped and rusted to mirror-like razor sharp. For the curved blades I took several paint stir sticks and contact cemented strips of each grit on a side and I use it like a file. It's a little tougher to keep the angle true, but a little practice and you still get a really good edge. Better than any store bought tool I've seen.
