I just finished a Merganser 16. Well, I should put a few more coats of varnish on it but I just had to get it in the water. As to handling qualities, I enjoy it very much. I haven't a lot of experience in a lot of other boats but speaking generally, It tracks very nicely even in a following breeze and sea (as much as I've experienced on Skaneateles Lake so far) yet turns well with a strong lean and a sweep. I've rolled it once, it did that nicely. A light weight wooden boat is a joy on the water.
As to building, this is my first boat, and though I made a few minor errors nothing set me back and I'd have to point out the mistakes to most people. I started in May and had it in the water in August. I built from plans as I'm a bit of a cheapskate and a friend is building a 17w so we ordered materials together to save shipping.
I chose the Merganser for its' traditional lines. I just like the way it looks.
I'm thinking now of building Eric's S&G double baidarka.
