: Is there a problem with building a strip kayak from pine only? What are the
: disadvantages/advantages of a pine built kayak when compared to a redwood
: built kayak? Does anyone have an opinion based upon the following criteria
: about the advantages/disadvantages of pine compared to redwood?:

:1) Ease of Construction

Redwood is more brittle, but shapes more easily. It is slightly less stiff than pine, so is easier to form, but not quite as stiff on the boat (glass takes care of most of this problem)

: 2) Longevity

Redwood is more rot-resistant, but that's not much of an issue when the boat will be encased in fiberglass.

: 3) Looks

Use both--one is light, one is dark red. It's a great contrast!!

: 4) General Quality of the kayak

Depends on the General Quality of the builder's handiwork.

: 5) Kayak Weight

Redwood is noticeably lighter.
