I had the same problem and had pretty much the same fix. After the first jaggy dart, I let it dry and then sanded it. Then I put on another layer of tape over stem (going vertical along stem line), let that dry and then sanded that. Finally, I put on a latex glove, got some wet not too thick epoxy on it, and smoothed it over the stem. With a final sanding and painting it now looks fine.
