You might also consider making it (the shaft) hollow: lower weight and larger diameter for a good easy grip will be possible. Stiffness too, if you shape the hollow and sides correctly to resist the bending.
As simple as a paddle can be, one can also make it a "high-tech" project , and maximize the fun.
