A long paddle would probably solve the knuckle-banging issue, but lengthening the paddle will have other consequenses for such a short boat. The longer paddle will start to make the boat fish-tail through the water -- the applied force will be farther out, causing a larger turning moment. In that case, a skeg might be needed. So making a longer paddle fixes one problem but creates another.

You still might consider making a euro paddle. If this boat will be used in shallow water like rivers and estuaries, you'll get a better 'bite' in the shallow water with a euro paddle.
