Hi Richard,
I'm not familiar with the book or kayak that you're describing. But I'd suggest doing a little research into some of the designs offered by the denizens of this board. Here's a closely guarded secret of the kayak builders fraternity...(lowering voice) even the most beautiful, strip built boats don't require that much woodworking skill. Never divulge this to the admiring throngs you'll meet whenever you paddle your boat. So if you're going to build a boat, pick one that you really love - and one that the designer is only an email away.
