Even a deck filled with steel fitting will not impede compass operations, BUT, you would have to use compensating blocks, aka navigators balls to ensure that. Positioned properly, they would negate the effect of the other metals. A lot of overkill for a kayak, not to easy to properly position without reference equipment and fancy charts. It would be simpler to not use metals that stick to a magnet.

More likely a problem would be the load of stuff shoved in the boat for a trip. A free check would be to set the kayak on the grass and note the compass reading. Pack the boat without moving it at all, and recheck the reading. Even if it does deflect it, as long as you keep track of how it deflects it for the trip, you will be ok. Though it would be far easier to just shuffle the load around.

Lastly, be aware of stray electrical currents. A lit flashlight can deflect a compass. The more juice, the more the deflection.
