The hatch and the flex tube are totally separate entities if that wasn't clear. My dayhatch is as you describe. The flex tube is mounted under the foredeck between my knees. It is secured by bungee attached to eyeloops epoxied on underside of deck. To keep things from falling out, I have bungeed to "lids" to either end. The lids are cut from normal blue cheapo tarp like people use to cover their boats. It seems to work pretty well.
