Craig,

The "boot" is the bracket that the drive attaches to. It extends below the hull in order to reduce leg height. I've heard from recumbent bike riders that if your legs are near or above eye level, you may have blood circulation problems. So, you can only raise the leg height a little before needing to raise the seat. On the other hand, mounting it below increases drag.

Good luck, it will be a fun and challenging project.
