I insured my Outer Island for $4000 and it costs me $40/year. I have my car and renters' insurance through State Farm, so they tacked on a Boatowners policy that I pay along with my renters's insurance. I didn't need an appraisal, either, but I stopped in to the agent's office when I had it on my roof rack, and he took a Polaroid picture of it for his records.
