: Hi Roger,
: How did you boil the Alaskan Yellow Cedar? I have about 20 pieces of clear
: 7/8" x 6" x7' that I can use for a lot of projects. Do you
: recommend this wood for ribs?
: Boil it at the same rate as steaming, i.e. 20 min. per inch?
Sounds like great wood. Is it quarter sawn? when cut into strips it needs to have an edge grain.
I haven't boiled wood myself for bending. I saw spirit Line Kayaks demonstrate this method. They left the AYC in the boiling water and whenever they needed a piece, just fished it out. all thier rib stock was in the boiling water at the same time. This method is supposed to work best with AYC. They were using a millitary ammo box to boil the wod in with a coleman double burner underneath it.
: I guess I could use a couple of hot plates under some sort of metal trough
: for boiling short lengths --- just wondering if there is a better way.
I've been looking for a trough. If you find something that works, please post it on the web.
Roger
