Six layers is not too many. 24 hours between coats is normal, but I have put as many as three on in one day without sanding between coats and it worked OK. I would think if you were going to have a problem, it would be right away.

Is the Small Craft Festival at St. Michael's this weekend? If so, might see you there on the way home.
