That's correct. Oil will loosen the tape. I didn't do any direct tests with oiled wood, but found that oil based urethane over the top of the fabric did cause the glue underneeth to dissolve a bit on a test sample. You may be right that it would hold long enough to do your stretching and stitching. Worth a look into. The tape is cheap and less intrusive than staples.
